You ever see a movie, realize that it's not what you were expecting, and leave disappointed, only to watch it later and think "Hey, that was great! What was my problem, then?" I have, and for that very reason, I will sometimes give a movie I was initially disappointed in a second chance to impress me. Without my former expectations getting in the way, I sometimes find that I'm able to enjoy the movie on its own merits--maybe even more than if the movie had been what I'd expected.
Yeah...that didn't happen with Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell. I went in expecting a straight-up horror movie, and got, well, something different. Now, that's partly my fault. It's Sam Raimi, for crying out loud! The guy who did the Evil Dead movies. Of course you're not going to get straight up horror! Mea Culpa (that's Latin for "My Bad"). The problem was that, even knowing that I was seeing a horror-comedy, a second viewing this past weekend didn't improve it for me.
I wanted to like it. I loved Raimi's Army of Darkness. But I just didn't find any of the gags funny, and without the hilarious Bruce Campbell to help it along, I just kept thinking I wasn't getting a horror OR a comedy. So, I guess I'd have to say that if you absolutely love Raimi's style, then go for it. You'll probably like it. If not, and you haven't seen Drag Me To Hell, then don't bother. You got better things to do with your time. Trust me.
Cheers,
Chris
